Home Organizing

Creating a functional kitchen

The design and layout of a space is essential to being organized. In order to be successful in creating and maintaining organization, it is important to have a foundation that establishes how items can be organized and stored in a space. This is true for every area in your home, especially the kitchen, which is used daily and has to store a wide range of items.

To help create and maintain and organized kitchen, it should be designed to have plenty of variable storage for everything you have – from cooking utensils to dinnerware. The design and organization structure should work with how you live and what you use in your kitchen. It is important to consider your items, what you have, and if they are large or small.  Ask yourself if you need drawers or cabinets. How deep should these drawers be? Do you need lots of drawers for gadgets, or deep drawers for pots and pans, serving bowls, or other dishes? All of these questions and factors play an important role in determining the best design and organization for your space.

With the help of Calm Order, we can make sure that your kitchen space is maximized to provide optimal storage sizes for your kitchen implements.

For example, when you’re cooking you want the items you need kept somewhere close – if you’re cooking on the stove-top, you should have pots and pans, utensils and spices in easy reach. If you have a dishwasher, then dishware, mugs, glasses and eating utensils should also be stored near the dishwasher so they are in close proximity for easy unloading.

What you can do to help create organization and functionality in your kitchen is to cut back on clutter or unnecessary items and keep similar items together. Only keep appliances, tools and dishes that you actually need and use. When you’re going through your items, always keep in mind what you actually use your space and items for. Sometimes, having dishware or specific kitchen gadgets (and multiple quantities of them) may seem important, but in reality they aren’t used and take up unnecessary space. Go through the items you have stored in your kitchen and consider what you really need, and what you can live without. If they are still in good shape, you can pass them on to a friend or family member or donate them to a local charity. With less items in your space, it will be easier to plan an organized layout that best suits your needs and lifestyle.

In areas like the kitchen which see regular use by everyone in your home, space functionality is imperative to efficiently using the space and maintaining organization. It all comes down to how you use the space and what makes the most sense for your lifestyle. Need some help planning your new kitchen or updating your existing one? Having a place for everything sets you up for success

Why is space planning so important? Having a designated space for all of your items – whether it be the furniture in your living room or the dishes in your kitchen – will ensure that your home is organized and free of clutter. Proper storage solutions and room layouts can go a long way to making your daily life stress-free and organized because you will be able to find the items you are looking for quickly, they will have a smaller chance of getting lost or damaged, and you will be more inclined to put things away and prevent clutter from accumulating.

When items have their own place, it is easier to follow an important guideline for staying organized: keep like items together. For example, if you have a closet set-up to store linens, it is a good idea to make sure all of your linens are stored in there. This way, you can easily find the linens you need without having to check multiple rooms or closets for what you are looking for. However, this can be difficult if you either don’t have a designated linen closet to begin with, or have a closet that isn’t big enough to store all of your linens.

A designated space is also essential to prevent clutter. Having a specific storage space for items will encourage you and your family to put items away after they are used, because you know where they are supposed to go. When it isn’t clear where an object is meant to go, or there isn’t sufficient space to store it, or it is out of the way, people can be less inclined to take that extra step to try and put items away when they are done with them. However, if there is a specific shelf or cupboard for an item that provides space and is easy to access, people will be more likely to tidy up after themselves.

Consider an area in your home that is used regularly, like a toy room – when kids have toys that need to be stored in an overflowing toy bin, or in a cupboard that is out of reach, they won’t want to put things away because it isn’t quick or easy. With properly planned storage like a shelving unit with different compartments and lower height, clean-up is a lot more appealing.

Proper storage also means that your items are better protected. Instead of shoving them into a drawer that isn’t deep enough or leaving them out to get banged up or scuffed, storing them in a place where they fit properly will ensure your items last longer. Calm Order can work with you and your design team to create an organizing solution that has the dimensions and layout to fit your belongings and lifestyle.

Whether you are building, renovating or moving, Calm Order can set you up for success by working with you to create storage solutions and home layouts that are organized and functional.

Organizing is much more than organizing clothes or items in your home – it’s about bringing calm and order to a space and making it last. Organization is a process that should begin as early as possible. In order to make the most impact, and ensure it lasts, organization should be put in place at the very start – not just when there is a problem.

At Calm Order, our professional organizers work with clients, designers and builders to create the best possible solutions in existing homes, new homes or renovated homes. With organizers involved from the start, you can tackle your organization problems before they even begin. Proper storage solutions and practical layouts can make all the difference in an organized space. By having an organizer’s input during your build or renovation, you can make sure every consideration is made for your new or existing home. Organizers are just as important as the designers, builders and contractors.

Don’t wait until designs are finished or the building and renovations have started. Calm Order can help determine cabinet and shelving depths, the quality of storage units, and how they can be used to make sure your items are organized, and more importantly, stay organized. Organization is much more than just a one-time project. It is a process that starts at the root of your home. How your home is set-up is the key to your success at maintaining an organized home. Our organizer will work with you and everyone involved on your home project to make sure organization is implemented in every area – from your master bedroom closet, to your kitchen and entertainment centre.

While many people focus on the style of their home, they shouldn’t give up its functionality. Organizers can ensure your home is a happy balance of both by working alongside designers and contractors throughout the entire process. It is important to have organizers consulting on your home project from the beginning, because they can see beyond the surface of your home, and determine what will keep you, your family, and your life in order.

Organization can fit seamlessly into the bones of your home, so each space is functional and practical. Your home is a storage space, an entertaining space, a cooking space, an eating space, a sleeping space, and so much more. By making organization a priority, you and your family can use every space in your home without worrying about clutter or losing and forgetting items. It has the power to impact how you and/or your family for the rest of the time you live in that home. If something doesn’t work from the start, it is much harder to make impactful changes.

At Calm Order, our professional organizers can do more than just organize a room in your home. They can make sure that organization is implemented into your home before it becomes a problem. When you are looking to move, renovate or build a new home, consult with Calm Order for the best possible storage and organization solutions.
